The Whango Tree - Anonymous

The Whango Tree - Anonymous

The woggly bird sat on the whango tree,
Nooping the rinkum corn,
And graper and graper, alas! grew he,
And cursed the day he was born.
His crute was clum and his voice was rum,
As curiously thus sang he,
'Oh, would I'd been rammed and eternally clammed
Ere I perched on this whango tree.'

Now the whango tree had a bubbly thorn,
As sharp as a nootie's bill,
And it stuck in the woggly bird's umptum lorn
And weepadge, the smart did thrill.
He fumbled and cursed, but that wasn't the worst,
For he couldn't at all get free,
And he cried, 'I am gammed, and injustibly nammed
On the luggardly whango tree.'

And there he sits still, with no worm in his bill,
Nor no guggledom in his nest;
He is hungry and bare, and gobliddered with care,
And his grabbles give him no rest;
He is weary and sore and his tugmut is soar,
And nothing to nob has he,
As he chirps, 'I am blammed and corruptibly jammed,
In this cuggerdom whango tree.'

A Vagabond Song - Bliss Carman

There is something in the autumn that is native to my blood —

Touch of manner, hint of mood;

And my heart is like a rhyme,

With the yellow and the purple and the crimson keeping time.
The scarlet of the maples can shake me like a cry

Of bugles going by.

And my lonely spirit thrills

To see the frosty asters like a smoke upon the hills.
There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir;

We must rise and follow her,

When from every hill of flame

She calls and calls each vagabond by name.

Travel - Edna St. Vincent Millay

The railroad track is miles away,
    And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
    But I hear its whistle shrieking.

All night there isn’t a train goes by,
    Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
    And hear its engine steaming.

My heart is warm with the friends I make,
    And better friends I’ll not be knowing;
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
    No matter where it’s going.

The Thunder Mutters Louder and More Loud - John Clare

The thunder mutters louder & more loud
With quicker motion hay folks ply the rake
Ready to burst slow sails the pitch black cloud
& all the gang a bigger haycock make
To sit beneath—the woodland winds awake
The drops so large wet all thro' in an hour
A tiney flood runs down the leaning rake
In the sweet hay yet dry the hay folks cower
& some beneath the waggon shun the shower.

Thanks for a Gift - Michelangelo Buonarroti

The sugar, candles, and the saddled mule,
Together with your cask of malvoisie,
So far exceed all my necessity
That Michael and not I my debt must rule,
In such a glassy calm the breezes fool
My sinking sails, so that amid the sea
My bark hath missed her way, and seems to be
A wisp of straw whirled on a weltering pool.
To yield thee gift for gift and grace for grace,
For food and drink and carriage to and fro,
For all my need in every time and place,
O my dear lord, matched with the much I owe,
All that I am were no real recompense:
Paying a debt is not munificence.

Sonnet Written at Stonehenge - Thomas Warton

          1Thou noblest monument of Albion's isle!
              2Whether by Merlin's aid, from Scythia's shore,
              3To Amber's fatal plain Pendragon bore,
              4Huge frame of giant-hands, the mighty pile
              5T' entomb his Britons slain by Hengist's guile:
              6Or Druid priests, sprinkled with human gore,
              7Taught 'mid thy massy maze their mystic lore:
              8Or Danish chiefs, enrich'd with savage spoil,
              9To Victory's idol vast, an unhewn shrine,
            10Rear'd the rude heap: or, in thy hallow'd round,
            11Repose the kings of Brutus' genuine line;
            12Or here those kings in solemn state were crown'd:
            13Studious to trace thy wondrous origine,
            14We muse on many an ancient tale renown'd.

Sonnet - Charles Harpur

SHE loves me! From her own bliss-breathing lips
The live confession came, like rich perfume
From crimson petals bursting into bloom!
And still my heart at the remembrance skips
Like a young lion, and my tongue too trips
As drunk with joy! while every object seen
In life’s diurnal round wears in its mien
A clear assurance that no doubts eclipse.
And if the common things of nature now
Are like old faces flushed with new delight,
Much more the consciousness of that rich vow
Deepens the beauteous, and refines the bright,
While throned I seem on love’s divinest height
’Mid all the glories glowing round its brow.

O Wert Thou in the Storm - John Clare

O wert thou in the storm,
How I would shield thee:
To keep thee dry and warm,
A camp I would build thee.

Though the clouds pour’d again,
Not a drop should harm thee;
The music of wind, and rain,
Rather should charm thee.

O wert thou in the storm,
A shed I would build thee;
To keep thee dry and warm,—
How I would shield thee.—

The rain should not wet thee,
Nor thunder clap harm thee.
By thy side I would sit me,—
To comfort, and warm thee.

I would sit by thy side love,
While the dread storm was over;—
And the wings of an angel,
My charmer would cover.

A Game of Chess - Mortimer Collins

I

Terrace and lawn are white with frost,

Whose fretwork flowers upon the panes —

A mocking dream of summer, lost

'Mid winter's icy chains.

II

White-hot, indoors, the great logs gleam,

Veiled by a flickering flame of blue:

I see my love as in a dream —

Her eyes are azure, too

III

She binds her hair behind her ears

(Each little ear so like a shell),

Touches her ivory Queen, and fears

She is not playing well.

IV

For me, I think of nothing less:

I think how those pure pearls become her —

And which is sweetest, winter chess

Or garden strolls in summer.

V

O linger, frost, upon the pane!

O faint blue flame, still softly rise!

O, dear one, thus with me remain,

That I may watch thine eyes!

False Though She Be - William Congreve

FALSE though she be to me and love,
  I'll ne'er pursue revenge;
For still the charmer I approve,
  Though I deplore her change.

In hours of bliss we oft have met:         5
  They could not always last;
And though the present I regret,
  I'm grateful for the past.

Batter my heart, three-person'd God - John Donne

Batter my heart, three-person'd God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town to another due,
Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captiv'd, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be lov'd fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

Apology for Vagrants - John Langhorne

For him who, lost to every hope of life,
  Has long with fortune held unequal strife,
  Known, to no human love, no human care,
  The friendless, homeless object of despair;
  For the poor vagrant, feel while he complains,
  Nor from sad freedom send to sadder chains.
  Alike, if folly or misfortune brought
  Those last of woes his evil days have wrought;
  Believe with social mercy and with me,
  Folly's misfortune in the first degree.
  Perhaps on some inhospitable shore
  The houseless wretch a widowed parent bore,
  Who, then no more by golden prospects led,
  Of the poor Indian begged a leafy bed;
  Cold on Canadian hills, or Minden's plain,
  Perhaps that parent mourned her soldier slain,
  Bent o'er her babe, her eye dissolved in dew,
  The big drops mingling with the milk he drew,
  Gave the sad presage of his future years,
  The child of misery, baptized in tears!

A Game of Chess - Mortimer Collins

I

Terrace and lawn are white with frost,

Whose fretwork flowers upon the panes —

A mocking dream of summer, lost

'Mid winter's icy chains.

II

White-hot, indoors, the great logs gleam,

Veiled by a flickering flame of blue:

I see my love as in a dream —

Her eyes are azure, too

III

She binds her hair behind her ears

(Each little ear so like a shell),

Touches her ivory Queen, and fears

She is not playing well.

IV

For me, I think of nothing less:

I think how those pure pearls become her —

And which is sweetest, winter chess

Or garden strolls in summer.

V

O linger, frost, upon the pane!

O faint blue flame, still softly rise!

O, dear one, thus with me remain,

That I may watch thine eyes!

False Though She Be - William Congreve

FALSE though she be to me and love,
  I'll ne'er pursue revenge;
For still the charmer I approve,
  Though I deplore her change.

In hours of bliss we oft have met:         5
  They could not always last;
And though the present I regret,
  I'm grateful for the past.

Batter my heart, three-person'd God - John Donne

Batter my heart, three-person'd God, for you
As yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend;
That I may rise and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town to another due,
Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end;
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captiv'd, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be lov'd fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy;
Divorce me, untie or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

Bible (KJV) 19: Psalm 023 King James Version (KJV)

Apology for Vagrants - John Langhorne

For him who, lost to every hope of life,
  Has long with fortune held unequal strife,
  Known, to no human love, no human care,
  The friendless, homeless object of despair;
  For the poor vagrant, feel while he complains,
  Nor from sad freedom send to sadder chains.
  Alike, if folly or misfortune brought
  Those last of woes his evil days have wrought;
  Believe with social mercy and with me,
  Folly's misfortune in the first degree.
  Perhaps on some inhospitable shore
  The houseless wretch a widowed parent bore,
  Who, then no more by golden prospects led,
  Of the poor Indian begged a leafy bed;
  Cold on Canadian hills, or Minden's plain,
  Perhaps that parent mourned her soldier slain,
  Bent o'er her babe, her eye dissolved in dew,
  The big drops mingling with the milk he drew,
  Gave the sad presage of his future years,
  The child of misery, baptized in tears!

The Thunder Mutters Louder and More Loud - John Clare

The Thunder Mutters Louder and More Loud - John Clare

The thunder mutters louder & more loud
With quicker motion hay folks ply the rake
Ready to burst slow sails the pitch black cloud
& all the gang a bigger haycock make
To sit beneath—the woodland winds awake
The drops so large wet all thro' in an hour
A tiney flood runs down the leaning rake
In the sweet hay yet dry the hay folks cower
& some beneath the waggon shun the shower.

Thanks for a Gift - Michelangelo Buonarroti

The sugar, candles, and the saddled mule,
Together with your cask of malvoisie,
So far exceed all my necessity
That Michael and not I my debt must rule,
In such a glassy calm the breezes fool
My sinking sails, so that amid the sea
My bark hath missed her way, and seems to be
A wisp of straw whirled on a weltering pool.
To yield thee gift for gift and grace for grace,
For food and drink and carriage to and fro,
For all my need in every time and place,
O my dear lord, matched with the much I owe,
All that I am were no real recompense:
Paying a debt is not munificence.

Sonnet Written at Stonehenge - Thomas Warton

          1Thou noblest monument of Albion's isle!
              2Whether by Merlin's aid, from Scythia's shore,
              3To Amber's fatal plain Pendragon bore,
              4Huge frame of giant-hands, the mighty pile
              5T' entomb his Britons slain by Hengist's guile:
              6Or Druid priests, sprinkled with human gore,
              7Taught 'mid thy massy maze their mystic lore:
              8Or Danish chiefs, enrich'd with savage spoil,
              9To Victory's idol vast, an unhewn shrine,
            10Rear'd the rude heap: or, in thy hallow'd round,
            11Repose the kings of Brutus' genuine line;
            12Or here those kings in solemn state were crown'd:
            13Studious to trace thy wondrous origine,
            14We muse on many an ancient tale renown'd.

Sonnet - Charles Harpur

SHE loves me! From her own bliss-breathing lips
The live confession came, like rich perfume
From crimson petals bursting into bloom!
And still my heart at the remembrance skips
Like a young lion, and my tongue too trips
As drunk with joy! while every object seen
In life’s diurnal round wears in its mien
A clear assurance that no doubts eclipse.
And if the common things of nature now
Are like old faces flushed with new delight,
Much more the consciousness of that rich vow
Deepens the beauteous, and refines the bright,
While throned I seem on love’s divinest height
’Mid all the glories glowing round its brow.

Song - Bliss Carman

O Wert Thou in the Storm - John Clare

O wert thou in the storm,
How I would shield thee:
To keep thee dry and warm,
A camp I would build thee.

Though the clouds pour’d again,
Not a drop should harm thee;
The music of wind, and rain,
Rather should charm thee.

O wert thou in the storm,
A shed I would build thee;
To keep thee dry and warm,—
How I would shield thee.—

The rain should not wet thee,
Nor thunder clap harm thee.
By thy side I would sit me,—
To comfort, and warm thee.

I would sit by thy side love,
While the dread storm was over;—
And the wings of an angel,
My charmer would cover.

The Guinea Pig - Anonymous

There was a little guinea pig,
Who being little, was not big;
He always walked upon his feet,
And never fasted when he eat.

When from a place he run away,
He never at the place did stay;
And while he run, as I am told,
He never stood still for young or old.

He often squeaked, and sometimes violent,
And when he squeaked he never was silent.
Though never instructed by a cat,
He knew a mouse was not a rat.

One day, as I am certified,
He took a whim, and fairly died;
And as I am told by men of sense,
He never has been living since.
